The Minister of Education (the Hon. •J. .Hanan) lias left on a visit to Inveraargill. Tho city engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) leaves on a holiday trip to Sydney by the Manuka to-day. Mr. P. D. Leslie, resident secretary of tho Colonial Mutual Life Office, has arranged to leave Wellington to-day on extended leave of absence for health purposes. Mr. Williams, science master at the Invercargill Boys' High School, has accepted an appointment (says the "Southland Times") to tho staff of tho Dunedin Technical College. Captain J. Jlawson, R.A.M.C., a son of Mr. H. P. Rawson, of Wellington, writing from Salonika, states that he was Chief Mediciil Officer _ on the transport Knight Templar taking troops from Alexandria to Salonika. Thero .was, he writes, lifeboat drill twice a day, when everyone had to wear a lifebelt. At all other times, on deck or down below, everybody had to carry a lifebelt,, either on his body or in his hand. When 111 bunk the lifebelt had' either to be worn or kept close by. . At Monday's meeting of Canterbury College Board of Governors tho resignation of Sir C. C. Bowen as representative of the Board cf Governors on the Senate of the University of Now Zealand, was received. The chairman, Mr. J. C. Adams, moved that the reffcnation be received with regret. Mr. Opie seconded the motion, and referred in very eulogistic terms to the work done by Sir C. C. Bowen. The motion was carried. Mr. .L. S. Drake, the city corporation's motor inspector, ,is among the latest enlistments in the reinforcements. Mr. Clias. Kerr, of the staff of Messrs. Clias. Begg and Co., Ltd.* has been appointed manager of the firm's branch at Oamaru. • Mr. B. E. Murphy, M.A., LL.B., 8.C0m., barrister-at-law, on the staff of Banks's Commercial College, lias just received official advice that he has been appointed a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society. Mr. Alfred' Matthews has heen reelected chairman of the South Wairatopa River Board. Mr. lE. H. Hiley, Railways Manager, ■ is in Auckland on business. Mr. Colin E. D. Rogers, well known in Australasian mining circles and managing director of the New Zealand Greenstone Company, Ltd., is at present in Wellington, staying at the Royal Oak. Hotel. Mr. W. A. Mokley (accountant for Mr. W. P. M'Cormick, Napier), who goes into camp on Tuesday next, has, says our correspondent, heen presented with a purse of sovereigns by his fellow employees.
