WORKING MEN'S CLUB
The seventy-sixth half-yearly report and balance-sheet of the Wellington Working Men's Club, to be presented by the president (Mr. M'Nees), shows that, like most other institutions, tho war has affected it to a certain extent. Increased prices for the ordinary requirements of the club have considerably swelled the expenditure account, but when tlio sum of £310 for alterations is considered, and £21\135. 6d. as donations to very deserving objects, the half-year's working shows a clesfr profit of £170; so that, on the whole, the position of the club can bo considered as fairly satisfactory. The orchestra, as usual, has done well, and its leader (Mr. John M'Glashan) is to be complimented on the high standard of efficiency attained by it. The chess and draughts section is to the .fore, and the rifle club is doing well, despite the loss of many of its best members, who have gone to the'front. In connection with this, the report records with pride that fifty-seven club members heard the call of duty and are upholding the honour of their country in various spheres of action. The club also forwarded 300 parcels of tobacco, accompanied by Christmas greetings, to the lads in the firing-line. Reference is made in the report to the death of several members, I among them the late Mr. J. B. Graliam, I who was a trustee of the club and highly esteemed. Tbe various committees have carried out their duties with attention, ably assisted by the consulting members.
