BENZINE EXPLOSION
ON THE KETCH KERERU THREE THOUSAND CASES ABOARD By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 27. At 7.-30 o'clock, this evening an explosion of benzine occurred on the ketch Kereru, lying at? the King's Wharf, which resulted to a fire breaking out aboard the'vessel. She trades regularly to Niue Island, and at the time of the" explosion had three thousand cases of benzine aboard loaded for Gisborae and Napier, and consigned to Messrs. Cranley and Co. Two Niue Islanders were very severely burned by the explosion, and were taken to the hospital. The fire spread rapidly, and. is still burning fiercely, several minor explosions of benzine occurring. The fire brigade and fire-float are pumping water into the ship with the object of sinking her. The cargo and vessel will probably be a total loss. The Kereru is of 90 tons, valued for insurance purposes at £1200. She is insured for £600 in the South British Office. The owners are Messrs. T. M. Lane and W. Putting. The cargo is valued at £2500.
