THE CALL FOE MEN
CITY POSITION
INFANTRY NEEDED BY FEBRUARY
DEALING WITH SURPLUS ARTILLERY
This week's roturn of the position of recruiting in Wellington City shows that the City is still short of infantry for the 13th Reinforcements, who are to go into camp oil February 8. Following is tlio return: —
The: following is a comparison of the number of men a-vailablo for February 8, with the number required • , r , , Quota. Secured. •Mounted 37 04 Artillery 16 182 iwigmcerß 9 63 Signal 3 ig Infantry ................. 139 100 A.S.C. 4 40 Ambulance 0 55 _ The only "paper"" shortage, therefore, is ill infantry, for which 39 more men are needed. There are registered as prospective n.c.o.'s many more men than are immediately and the City group commander (Major Corrigan) states that a good proportion of the n.c.o. candidates are transferring to the ordinary lists. There are now 100 n.c.o. candidates on the City books ( which is enough for about six montlis. • Drastic steps are being taken (it is etated) with regard to the large number of Artillery and A.S.C.. men on the City waiting lists. There arc 211 Artillery men 011 the register, which is moro than a year's supply. In future, only specially qualified men will be allowed to register for this arm of the service. There are enough A.S.C. men enrolled to suffice, for ten months, so similar restriction is to be applied with regard to that branch. Many men in both these arms will receive notices that tfhey have been transferred to the infantry arm.
1 LATEST RECRUITS. . The following men have been enrolled in tho City as fit for active service:— !Frank Teverask, labourer, Raurimu (Infantry). James Rammar, oamp cook, City (A.S.C.). James Jamieson, seaman, Sidey Street, City (Infantry). Geo. Hills, labourer, Fitzherbert Street; City (Samoa). Francis L. Scambary, labourer, Kilbirnie (Mounted). Geo. W. Gunn; bookbinder, Abel Smith Street, City (Infantry). Albert Harris, labourer, Ngaio (Mounted). Wm. Marshall, telegraph linesman, City (Wireless). Recruiting at the Town Hall. Since the beginning of the year, the Recruiting Office at the Town Hall has put through 329 recruits, bringing the total of fit men accepted at that office up to 1873.' The majority of these elected to serve in the infantry. The honorary recruiting officer, Captain Barclay, points out that, while it has been urged that recruits should not be •' asked to select the arm with which they desjre to serve, a question to that effect is embodied ,in tho registration card which recruits fill in and sign. Taking an' average week's enlistment, the proportions worked out somewhat in the following manner:—lnfantry 62, Mounted 28, Artillery 16, Engineers 6, Army Service Corps 12, Army Medical Corps 2, Army Pay Department (special), 4, Wireless Corps (special) 10. In tho face of these figures, Captain Barclay considers that the proportions required and the men offering'in each branch are about equal. Rowland, Jeweller, 90 Manners Street, is the firm who are giving 15 per cent. (3s. in the .£) to soldiers or their friends when purchasing anything for them. , Badges, wristlet watches, engagement rings, etc. See Rowland about it, —Advt.
