THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS TRENTHAM TRAINING NOTES. IBY C 3lekcoj.l Several motor-cars crowded with passengers made the trip to Treutlnim yesterday to witness the gallops. The weather was calm ami the work dono was the best of the last two weeks. The trial grass and tan tracks were in use, but the latter was the more freely used as the grass is pretty hard, and rain would bs welcome before tho meeting. .T, Lowe stripped Chakwana first, and with a feather-weight in the saddle sho ran five furlongs in lmin. 2sec. Seadown, who is coming on fast, was much too good for Happiness at the end of six furlongs. The Highden team was not asked to do much, but all look well. Bertrada is scratchcd behind, the result of getting galloped on at BUerslie, bu,t she is going well on the tracks, and should make a good showing in the welters here. In the past this mira has always shown her best form under a high scalo of weights. Indigo, who is to be riddon by P. E. Jones, was given easy pacing. A good Cup trial was registered by Taringamutu, who ran 10 furlongs in 2min. llsec. Emerson was in. the saddle, and Tangihou was to have accompanied the mare, but the latter slipped him at the start, and the chestnut did not get near her again. Had she had something to finish with her, Taringamutu: would probably have registered much better time as she went very slowly down the back stretch. Gold Soult alone ran gix furlongs at a strong pace. Belasco was tflo gwd for Martyress over tne 6ame distance. Limpet finished in front cf her stable companions, Rockbound and Sabana, ov® five furlongs. Tho Cup candidates, Welcome Nugget and Square Deal, worked together onco round. The former finished very well, but there was no pace oh over the lirst portion of the journey. Empcrador never let Nones in over six furlongs, which took lmin. 15 3-ssec, a time which Chortle, going alone, improved upon. Bimetcr, who appears to be remarkably fresh, considering the Tacing 'he had at. Ellerslie, moved very attractively over six furlongs. Hyttus did not please over a five-furlongs bout, but Shaki did extra well, and is sure to run well in whatever he is started in. Jtartu/k (W. Bell) was far too good fQr a companion over six furlongs. The Mar J tian filly has performed consistently in the south, and may increase her score here. Others to do useful wort were Multiplication, Mulatto, Findhora, Bee, Mcnelaus, Masoot, and Rose Pink. The Hastings contingent included Backall, Dribble, Downham, Hinemanu, Queen Lizzie, Whakahoki, Tino Atua, Barley Sugar, and Sweet Corn, but none of them were asked to do much. By tho Ruahine, wh-'ch arrived last week, Mr. W. H. E. Wanklyn received his English-bred filly by ISarla Mor from Fotharta, by Blairfinde (a half-brother to Galteo More and Ard Patrick). When tho youngster was being landed the wire ropo snapped, and the box fell on the deck of the boat, but luckily tne lilly was not hurt.

First Glance, who arrived from the south yesterday, looks very well, and despite her big weight the imported mare is suro to "ive a good account of herself in tht Wellington Cup. One of the most interesting events to be decided at Trentlram on the opening day ol' the Cup Meeting will be the Waterloo Stakes, one mile, weight for age. The probable .contestants are: Nones, Emperador, Flying Start, Chortle', Expect, and Wishful. The issue may be between Chortle, who will strip very well, and the better of R. J. . Mason's pair. On their showing yesterday, Emperador roay account for Nones, though prior to her mishap at the Riccarton November fixture the filly was. always nearest to Desert Gold in hel efforts in public.
