MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THE HAINING STREET RAID The eleven men arrested during the Haining Street raid made by the Mount Cook police 'on Friday night appeared in the Stipendiary Magistrate's Courton Saturday morning. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., 'was on the Bench. The five Europeans—Jamea Walker, John Torolin, Prank Nelson, Peter. La Paine, and Arthur West—were charged with having been found in. a common gaming-house, and each was fined £1. The Chinese were Ah Yet, Ah Wong, Yep Sing, Cum Ling, Ah Kin, and Joe Mee. Joe Mee was charged with being the occupier of a common gaming-house, commencing a lottery, assisting in tha management of a lottery, and being found in a common /gaming-house. Ah Kin was charged with being found in a gaming-house, and with, smoking opium. . ' Ah Yet was, charged with being found in a gaming-house. Ah Wong was charged with being the occupier of a gaming-house, commencing a lottery, and assisting in the management of a lottery. Yep Sing was charged with assisting in tho management of a lottery and with being found in a common gaming-house. Cum Ling was charged with being the occupier of a gaming-house, commencing a lottery, and assisting in the management of a lottery. All . were remanded till Friday next on bail. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared as their counsel.

OTHER CASES. Chas. W. Smith, who has absented himself without leave from the s.s. Kia Ora, was fined two days' pay, with costs 75., and ordered to be placed aboard the vessel.' On a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, Margaret Henara was remanded for one week. Arthur Cudby and Henry Arthur Granfc_ were convicted of the theft of two bicycles, and ordered to appear for sentence when called on. , For insobriety, James Hogg was fined £1 and Ajithony Bannister 10s.
