THE NAVY LEAGUE

A.meeting of tlie local executive of the Navy League was held last. night, and was attended by Mr. A. H. Miles (in the chair), Mr. D. M'Kellar, Mr. C. It. Smith, Mr. R. Darroch, Mr. G. G. Townsend, Mr. A. Atkins, Major Poison, and Mr. C. W. Palmer.

The ' entertainment sub-committee, Messrs. C. R. Smith, R. Darroch, and C. W. Palmer, reported that after full consideration it. had been found necessary to finally abandon the annual demonstration "In Honour of the Allied Navies," which had formerly been arranged for Trafalgar Day. (In' this connection, Mr. Darrocii exhibited at the meeting a handsome souvenir programme of the huge demonstration held by the League in Lon-don-on October 20 under the patronage of Queen Alexandra, the Peerage, and many hundreds of prominent naval and military officers. The charge for seats had been 10s. 6d., and the programmes bad been sold at 2s. 6d, each.) The presentation of prizes to some 200 successful essayists was left to the entertainment su.b-committee to arrange. . On the recommendation of Messrs. Darroch and Palmer, it was resolved to order 500 additional copies of "The History of the Royal Navy," and 1000 copies ' of "Everybody's Bool: of the Navy".' for the school members. '

It was reported that £Ub 7s. id. had been collected to date for the Sailors' Comforts Fund, of which had already been remitted to headquarters for expenditure by the special committee to the very best advantage of the bluejackets and mine sweepors. i The action of the secretary in circulating reprints from the London "Times" as to the work of the Navy was approved. Some 30,000 copies were being circulated through the adult community per. medium of the town, and country schools, clubs, etc.

A quantity of correspondence wss dealt with, and accounts amounting to .£l9 9s. fid. wsro passed for payment.
