HONOUR AND ARMS 'iN THE PUBLIC SERVICE.

"The Public Service roll of hononr is a- long ono now, and- we have to mourn tho loss of many comrades who have fallen face t-o foe, and with a cheer on their lips.' But as they fall each gap in tho ''ranks must be filled, and the call is heard for men and still maintained. Men in all ranks of the Service have responded freely to the call, and each day sees new names added to the' list of There_o.ro those of us who must remain behind for good reasons, but we know that the spirit of true patriotism, that sense of doing duty owing to King and country, is intense and general in the Service, and that many willing ones chafe -under disabilities which debar them from, active participation. "To the relatives of those wno have, fallen, we, on behalf of tho association, tender our heartfelt sympathy, and trust that their sorrow may ho tempered with pride in tho knowledge that their men died as soldiers would wish to die, fighting for tho freedom of their country and the liberties of the loved ones at home. .To those at tho front still under, arms wo send greetings and the assurance that their fellow officers are proud of them and pray for their safety. They need not fear fortgetfulliess on our part, or indifference to their welfare, for our thoughts are ever with them, and we are proud to know that this young country, small in area and number of population though it be, is the birthplace of gallant soldiers whose deeds of valour are not less heioic than those of the sons of other and older lands. Their record in the history of the British Empire will be such an one that future generations of New Zealanders will'feel honoured that they belong to tlio race that Lrsd such iucu.
