COMMANDEERED MEAT
(To the Editor.)
Sir, Will you allow mo to corrccfc ah erior m your report of the conference c Ti l ■. evOlllll S i" the committee room or the A. and i\ Association here. 1 was present and was appointed secretary to the committco. The chairman i? lavo remarked that the British Government must have made a million and a half over the sale of meat which was not considered suitable for army purposes, and the British public had secured the benefit of it. In point of fact, the chairman said, that the meat had . been sold to British and other speculators, and the British public had not received the benorifc of it.' As you will see, your report conveys just the opposite impression and I should be glad if you would afford mo tlio spaco in your valuable paper to correct it. I take this opportunity of saying that it ivas the feeling of TTio meeting that if the meat had been marketed in such a way as to allow of its purchase at a reasonable rate by the consumers, the majority of whom are poor people who have fathers, sons, and husbands fighting our battles, aud in too -many cases laying down their lives for us, not a farmer in tlio Dominion but would have considered any sacrifice in price on his part would have been amply compensated for bysthe knowledge that lie was helping to tlio common good. As it is now, it would appear that the very people whom they are desirous' of helping are being exploited, while tlio producers of this Dominion are reaping no benefit. —I am, etc., H. A. LENNON,
Secretary Egmoui A. and P. Association, Hawera, convener of the conference. ■
