HUTT CLUB'S.OPENING. Glorious weather prevailed on Saturday afternoon for t-lio opening of tho Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club's green, and -the grounds formed a pcrfect elysium of vernal beauty, thanks to careful attention and an ideal spring. In opening the green the president (Mr. C. H. Troadwcll) made a fitting reference to the death of the club's patron, Mr. John Duthie, whose memory, lie said, would be kept green by the tropliy presented years ago for competition between the Hutt, Wellington, and Waliganui Clubs. He also referred to the depleted membership of the Tennis Club, many members at present doing their duty for their country. He wished the club a successful season, and called on Mrs. Treadwell to throw the jack. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, which was ' gorgeously ' decorated with flowers. The Lyall Bay Bowling and Tennis Club's grounds were opened for play on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Fairway, the president of the club, in welcoming the visitors, referred to the fact that 1-1 members of the club had enlisted. The membership of the Tennis Club had been greatly reduced through various reasons, but the bowling membership was steadily increasing, and there iverc now 70 members on the roll. After the president had declared the grounds open tor play, the first jack was thrown by Mrs. Morrah, and a game was played between rinks representing the President and Past President. . The green 'was in first-class condition, and reflected great credit on the caretaker, j The crojuet lawn was well filled by ! the ladies, -who played until dark. During the afternoon tlie trophies iron last season by tennis players were presented by the president. The following will represent the Lyall Bay Bowling Club in friendly matches on Saturday next:—At Wellington Green: Dallison, Mapplebeck, Smith, Brantjon (s.); Reid, Hackworth, Blake, Campbell (s.). At Victoria Green: Tyrrell, Dillon, Irvine, Lambert (s.). At Home: Robinson, Brailsford, M'Kenzie, Ferguson (s.); Toomer, Pears, Burgess, Fairway (s.); Purchas, Mcston, H. Ward, Martin (s.). THE CHRISTMAS GIFT FUND.
It. wjis agreed at a meeting of the \\ ellmgton fowling Centre held last evening jliat the clubs should be circularised asking them to set aside Saturday, October 30, as the Christmas shilling Gilt Day, for- the purposes of supplying tobacco and sweets to the New Zealand troops at the front. It is proposed that tliis- shall bo done in a maimer suitable to. the clubs, either by a tournament or subscription or both, as they may think best. The clubs are also being asked to donate the receipts of any club tournaments that may be held on Labour Day (Monday next) to the fund, in acadition to tho amount to bo collected oh October 30. Clubs are asked to forward all moneys so raised to tlic secretary oi the centre, Mr. J. J. Huberts, before November 13, and he will hand over the amount in one cheque to the secretary of tho Sports Club. Mr. A. J. Benzie, the enthusiastic Te Hiwi skip, has once more issued his "Bowling Year Book," a handy little compilation that every bowler who takes any real interest in the game should possess. It gives the dates of the principal tournaments of the season and the exact dates of all the inter-club fixtures from /the present time to March jiext. The office-bearers of each club are given and in most cases half-tones of the presidents appear. The "Year Book" is particularly valuable to beginners, as it contains tho rules of the game.
