FRENCH CLUB

There was an improved attendance at the French Club's mooting on Thursday evening. Mr. Cooke presided, and introduced Mrs. Baudall, who gave a lecturo on the author, La Bruyore, and his works. Speaking in most excellent French, she treated her subject in a very lively, interesting manner. Tho lecture vras divided into two parts. Tlio first part was a sketch of tho life and character of the author, and showed especially how he obtained the material which he afterwards ueed in depicting his "characters." The second part dealt with his style, and was illustrated by the reading of a number of typical extracts his works, particularly tho various kinds of "characters" w'o moot in life. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer.
