DANGEROUS DISEASES
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST IMPORTATION. The Minister Public Health- was asked by Mr. Witty yesterday whether, in view of the fact that there-were outbreaks of smallpox in Newcastle and elsewhere 'in Aiistralia, : and Vof bubonic plague in other 1 , ports to ■ which New. Zealand ships trade, he.was taking steps to prevent the introduction of disease to New Zealand.
The Hon. 6. W. Russell said that the matter had been receiving attention for some time, and developments ivere beingclosely, watched.. It was considered undesirable to set up anything in the way of a quarantine against Australia until the circumstances demanded it.
Mr. Isitt asked the Minister whether, in view of certain'special circumstances existing in connection with the Defence' organisation) proper steps were being taken to prevent-the spread of contagious diseases.';'Mr. Russell said that gTeat car© was being taken, and soldiers, were not discharged from, the institutions to which ;they were sent until a most rigid inspection satisfied the authorities that all danger of infection was past.
