The sale of work organised , by the Sailors' Mend Society yesterday was a great success in every way. Mrs. Williams declared the 6ale open, and added thnt there was a danger of tho men of the sea beni" forgotten in the demands of to-dny. Yet .as tlioy carried our troops and conveyed our produco ' from our shores they too should share in our hospitality. The. chairman (Mr. W. Allan), Mr. (Rennor (secretary), and the missioner spoke with keenness on the work. : In the evening various things were sold for the 1 benefit of the work and the .Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund. An entertainment was provided, throusli the kindnoss of Miss Stairmand and her pupils, who gave clever exhibitions of dumb-bell and Swedish drill, etc. At the close a hearty vote of thanks was accorded' the performers. The stall-holders were: Mesda-mes Thirkell, Cnlnus,. Moore, Bnker, Johnns/m, Dunn, Hiinf, Glover, Conlbr, and Mason, Misses ICreeft. Morrah, Fulton, Tliirkell, Boyd, M. A raffle, promoted by the , boys of Croydon School, Day's Bay, in aid of the Belgian Children's Fund, was drawn on Saturday afternoon. The prize, a bedspread presented to the Croydon boys by Mrs. C. Bennett, of Mastert'on, was won by Mrs. A, B. Russell, of Tuanui, Hastings. Mrs. Kelly,. Mayoress of jiassbourjie, kindly consented to draw the.rattle. The handsomo sum of £21' 17s.' was realised for the little Belgians, and has been forwarded to:.the secretary for. the fund..
The Rifle Club of the women's branch of the iSational Reserve in Auckland is one of its most popular activities, and great interest was taken in a shooting match, Women v. Men, which was held at the Drill Hall on Friday night. The , men competing belonged to the mounted branch of reserve, and the. teams were ten a-side. The match resulted in a decisive'win for the women, whd scored 325 points, as against 307 for the men. The fine marksmanship of the women came as a considerable surprise to many of: their opponents, and showed that the excellent coaching the Women's Riiie Club has had during the last few months has borne good result. The highest- score , made—34 out of. 35—was. credited to Miss Fenton; 33-being the highest individual score on the . other' side. The shooting of the women maintained an excellent average, very few scoring fewer than 30. Quar-termaster-Sergeant .Robertson, of the Permanent Staff,.acted as scorer.
.The monthly ...committee', meeting of the District Nursing Guild of St. John was'held. at. the residence, of Mrs,-W. H. Sefton Moorhouse on Monday. Mrs. Moorhouse presided, .and there were also present Mesdames' Corrigan and _ Griftiths, and . Misses Mack and Itobioson. Apologies were received from Mesdames Tripo and Pearson. ;
Nurse Walton's, report showed that during the month' of • September twelve new patients were , registered,-26 remaining from the .previous-month, while eight were discharged', one admitted to hospital, and two died. During the month. 536 visits; were paid ' By. , the: nurses. ' '.
Gifts were acknbwledged from Mesdames fanning, Moorhouse, Seaward; and Stace, Mr. Cooper,' Gear Co., .Terrace Young Women's Club, ; and, two anonymous parcels. A subscription of £2 2s. was received from Mrs. Balcombo Brown.
The death occurred at a private hospital . at, Masterton, .on Sunday evening, of Mrs. Elizabeth Birkett, relict of the late Mr. William Birkett, and sister of Mr. F. W. Burling,-Mrs. H. Rayner, and Mrs: Holes, of Carterton. The late Mr. and Mrs.. Birkett. were both well 'known and highly respected settlers of that' district. y : ~
