NEW POSTAL RATES
OPERATE FROM TO-DAY POST AND TELECRAPH INCREASES. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) announces that beginning to-day the postago rates on all postal packota, including parcels, but excepting newspapers, are raised by ono halfpenny both lor packets addressed for delivery within the Dominion and for those addressed for delivery overseas. But in respect of those for delivery beyond the Dominion, in countries to which tho maximum Postal Union rates are already charged, that is to say, 2Jd. for tho first ounco and lid. for each succeeding ounce of letters, no additional chargo will bo mado. (The Postal Union rates are fully set out at the beginning of tho Post and Tolegraph Guide.) Postal packets not prepaid' oa this scale but wanting only tho halfpenny additional chargo will not he surcharged on delivery with more than the deficient halfpenny. Ordinary telegrams henceforward must bo paid for on week days at the rato of 3d. for the first twelve words, including address and signature; urgent*, Is. 2d_. On Sundays these rates .aro increased 'to Is. 2d. and 2s. 3d. respectively. That is to say that -the rates hitherto .charged aro increased in each case by 2<1., and tho Sunday rate is mado chargcablo at all offices. The rato for cablegrams will bo as hitherto, plus an additional 2d. Increased Press rates will be dealt with next week.
