CIVIL SERVANTS
PAYMENTS ON ACTIVE SERVICE. A statement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the lloii. G. \Y. Russell) last night regarding thp payments made to Civil Servants oOitig on active service. The statement 'was a reply to Mr. Glover (Auckland Central;, who had asked why the Government did not encourage their employees to enlist by granting them leave on half-pay, as was dono by many private firms? Mr. Russell stated: Pay to. Public Servants performing military duty is granted as follows: (a) Commissioned officers, to draw Defence pay. only, (b) Officers performing technical work who' are requisitioned—such as selected telegraphists, etc.—to 6e allowed' half Public Service pay and. military pay in addition. (c)-Wireless operators, specially requisitioned, not less than their Public Service pay .plus 25 per cent., or the military pay, whichever is the higher, (d) All other Government servants, 110 Public Service pay. (c) Government servants; 110 matter what their military rank, who may bo employer in work in the .Dominion, such as manning forts, guarding telegraph cables, ete., to be paid as if in instruction camps in time of peace—namely, their full Public Servico pay f but 110 military pay. (f) Leave of absence to bo granted to all permanent officers and such 11011.permanent officers as arc 011 a -quasipermanent footing. ■ Seniority of classified officers and superannuation rights to bo preserved. In addition to fiio foregoing the Government- has made itself responsible for tho payment of superannuation deductions, on behalf of all officers who have volunteered for service. 'It is not considered necessary to alter.the scale at present.
