■ • i—b—.— PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD. At tho recent conference of Chambers of Commerce held in Wellington it was resolved:— ''That the delegates to this conference arrange for the holding of, British patriotic trade protection meetings, at eacli city and town of moment throughout the Dominion on the evening of, say, September 13,- simultaneously at which addresses by representative men shall bo given." The purpose of calling such meeting as above proposed is to give offect to two important resolutions which received the cordial sanction of the conference. These were as follows:— (1) "By taking such action as is necessary to urge on the Government that from the termination of the war all imports from present enemy countries shall bo subject to a surtax in order to stop as far as possible imports from enemy countries; and, further, that preferential trade shall obtain . within the Empire, with modified preference to our Allies." (2) ' 'By taking _ steps to arouse, and keep alivo public interest in this' question, so that consumers may bo induced to ask for British-made goods, or goods made by Britain's Allies. This meeting was referred to at yesterday's meeting of, the Council of the Wellington Chamber, when Mr. T. Ballinger suggested that the Chamber might co-operate with the Central Chamber in holding the meeting. The president said he understood that the Central Chamber intended to hold its annual meeting on the same erening. ' It was announced that the Concert Chamber would bo available for Monday evening next. The names of possible speakers wore conned over, and filially it was resolved to leave tho arrangement of the meeting to Mri Macintosh, who would also arrange for the speakers.' , .
