OUR REQUEST FOR MACHINE-GUNS
WAR OFFICE REPLY
The Minister of Defence has received a reply from t-lie Imperial Government to his cabled requests for machine guns. Following is the toxt of the re^ ply;— "With reference to your "telagram of August 5, War Office grateful generous offer to supply machine guns, but as all available are required for distribution to tho troops, we regret cannot make special allotment New Zealand troops." Mr. Allen said, that hei knew as a fact that the War Office was obtaining machine guns in America and Canada, so that he did not think it was at all' possible that he would be able to get guns elsewhere. It is not clear therefore that the subscription of funds here will accelerate the production of machine guns, or add to the number supplied to our troops. The offer and the subscription of funds should have tho effect at least of letting the British people know that New Zealand is intensely patriotic.
