OPERATORS AND "FAT"
♦ ALLEGED BREACH OF AN AWARD. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, August 19.' In the Magistrate's Court to-day the Otago Typographical Union claimed £10 from the "Otago Daily Times" and "Witness" Newspapers Clompany for an alleged breach ot tho award by refusing to permit operators engaged on piecework to charge for certain advertising blocks appearing in the "Daily Times." It was explained to .the Court that both partios desired an.interpretation of the clause in the award, and to have the matter placed in a proper manner before the Arbitration Court. The question was whether all blocks should be>paid for as "fat," After evidence had been given for the union, Mr. Fenwick, who dofended the case, applied for a nonsuit, on the ground that the union had failed to show that any particular operator was entitled to charge for an advertisement, and that therefor there could be no breach of award.
Mr. Callan, for the union, said the practice was to pay the piece com* panionsliip for "fat," and payments so mado wore divided equally among companionships. The Magistrate, Mr. Widdowson, said ho would take time to consider the point raised by Mr. Fenwick, and the case was adjourned till September 2.
