The revised list of pay and allowances issued by the Defence Department has been hailed with relief by many families who were grieving because they could not afford to make a substantial allowance to one of tbeir members who had cono on ictive service to an Egyptian hospital. In the matter of salary a great improvement has been effected at one stroke by the Department. The staff nurses on active service are to be paid 7s. a day—that is, £127 los. a year— instead of £60 a year. The pay of sisters and matrons has also been substantially inoreased.
