NATIONAL RESERVE

Tlie Miramar unit of the National Reservo held a smoke concert on Saturday evening ,';t' Mir a mar Town Hall. Major F. Townsend occupied the chair. The guest of tlie evening was to have, been Lieutenant Nimmo, who unfortunately was confiticd to his room with a bad attack of bronchitis. However, the chairman announced that Lieutenant Nimmo had sent a representative in Mr. More ton. In the course of a stirring patriotic spccch, Major Townsend proposed the toast of "The King." 0 til or toasts followed: "Lieutenant Nimmo" by Lieutenant Rowntree, "Our Allies" by Major Townsend, "Our Officers" by Mr. Rowland, "National Reserve of New Zealand" by Mr. W. Houclien, "United Service," including "Our Boys," by Mr. L. Morton-Taylor. These were interspersed with songs, etc., by Mr. 8. Laslett Exton, W. Houchen, W. Fox, F. Robinson, J. Ellison. Norton Taylor, S. Stone, and F. Willis. Messrs. Holloway and Haig officiated at the piano. During the evening the chairman requested Mr. Moreton to accept on behalf of Lieutenant Nimmo a handsome gold-mounted walking stick from the members of the Miramar unit, in remembrance of Lieutenant Nimmo's efforts with tlie team for tho reccnt drill competition. Sergeant Hull, the squad commander, was also presented with a cane., suitably inscribed. , Lieutenant Rowntree also presented the prizes won in tlie recent shooting match tp Messrs. Rowland 1, Townsend 2, and Fox 3. The Hataitai division of B Company, 2nd Regiment, paradcj 70 strong ou Monday evening, and did excellent section platoon and company drill for an hour and a half. After a route march to Wellington Road, tlie company returned to the Poneko gymnasium for dismissal. Every week, it is stated, shows a marked improvement in tho steadiness of the men. The rifle range is to be formally opened by Colonel Porter, G. 8., Commandant, on Thursday evening.
