DEBATING SOCIETY

A very successful meeting was held on Saturday evening when Mr. H. L. James delivered an interesting lecture on Charles Dickens. A large number of members and friends greeted the speaker. Mr. James dealt with various characters of the well-known writer, and gave liis interpretation them. He also read portions from different books, his rendering of the items being particularly well received. So interesting and entertaining was the subject that at ten o'clock the audience unanimously asked Mr. James to extend his discourse. A collection was taken up in aid of the Belgian Fund and the sum of £2 ss. was received, 'Jliis will bo handed ever to the Onslow Borough Council to bo included ill their quota.

Mr. Edgar Jones, of Mt. Nessing Estate, Canterbury, and his wife and family, who have been in England for a couplo of years, arc, says an English paper, thinking of returning in a few months to New Zealand, but are at 'present, staying at the Langham Hotel. In Somerset, during the winter, Mr. Jones has rendered very signal servico in having induced the War Office, through various commanding officers," to substitute at least a small number of New Zealand horse-covers for the wretched specimens that are in vogue here. The authorities took no notice of Mr. Jones's protests, until at last ho had £100 worth of horsc-covers made to his directions, and presented them to special officer friends, having been greatly distrossod at hearing that the horse death-roll in somo regiments in camp was.one liorse per night. He is now giving practical help to the Blue .Cross League in the same direction.
