July 25, 3.30 p.m.) _ ' New York, July 24. Serious rioting .has occurred in connection with the strike at the Standard Oil Works,. four strikers being killed, and numbers wounded. Skirmishing took place between the guards and the crowds, the strikers replying with revolver volleys. Powerful searchlights helped to keep the rioters in check, but. sniping continued throughout the- night. Earjy in tlie morning a score of strikers tried to reach'the wall of tho works, with oil-soaked waste, intending to burn down the works,' but' the guards fired, and two men. fell. Hundreds of shots were exchanged. Later another 'batch tried to approach with fifty, pounds of dynamite. Tho guards opened fire and drove them back. The Sheriff lias asked tho Governor to call out the troops. Tlie strikers, demand a- fifteen per cent, advance j in":wages,.- hut the .'.manager lias that the; men must return to their places and work for four, days before he will grant a conference.'
