Mr. R. P. HUDSON (Motueka) gave notice to ask the Government to consider the advisability, of removing the duty on fruit-canning machinery. Mr. J. COLVIN (Buller) gave notice to ask the' Minister of Defence' to. explain the system upon ■which commissions aro giyen to members serving in the .'Expeditionary Force.
Leave of absence for. the rest of the session~;'was grainted to Mr. W. Downie Stewart and Mr. ,T. E. Y. Seddon, who have ,left to. join the Expeditionary Force. Tbiree days' leave of absence •was granted to .Mr. C.. Parata'on account .of'illness. .
The Shops and Offices Amendment Bill (Mr. .A. M. Myers) was introduced and read a'first, time. ' »
Mr!; A. HARRIS (Waitemata) . gave notice to introduce ' the Devohport Borough Vesting Bill, THE HOSPITAL AT TRENTHAM. The Hon. J. ALLEN (Minister of Defence) made a detailed statement, quoting extensively from the official file, concerning the erection of the hospital at Trentham Gamp. Mr. Allen recounted his share in the work preliminary to the letting of the contract.
Mr. T. M. WILFORD (Hutt), speaking with the indulgence of the House, ar»ued that there' had. been, linreasonablo delay as between the time the Minister- first agreed to build the hospital and the. letting of the contract.
