A GREAT FIGHT
THE ATTACK ON THE TOWN OF GALLIPOLI The Minister of Defence (the Hon. Jas. Allen) has received from General Sir lan Hamilton, Commanding the British Expeditionary Forces on Gallipoli, a dispatch similar in terms to tho official message describing the attack on the town of Gallipoli, which was cabled from. Cairo, and published in The Dominion yesterday. Referring to tho results of. the fighting, tho General adds: — "I am afraid the casualties are considerable, but details are lacking. The enemy lost very heavily. The type of fighting did not lend itself to making prisoners, and' only some 50, including an officer, are in our hands. "The elan and contempt of danger shown by the young Frenoh drafts of the'last contingent, averaging perhaps 20.years of age, was much admired by all. During the fighting the French battleship St. Louis did excellent service against; the Asiatic batteries. The French casualties' were approximately 2500, which for the great success gained is not excessive. The enemy's casualties were very heavy, estimated at not fewer ihan 7000, many of which were caused, by the French seventyfives, which during the counter-attack caught the Turks in dense formation and absolutely mowed them down. "The Turks were most gallant, and when short of ammunition fought the French with stones and fists, and in spite of heavy artillery fire advanced in rushes between the rapalos."
