CIVIC AFFAIRS

j MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL. At the fortnightly meeting of the City Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luko) presided, and there were also present: Councillors R. A. Wright, W. H. Bonnctt 1 \V. T. Hildrcth, T. Bush, John Fuller, junr., L. 51'Kenzic, W. J. Thompson, John Hutclieson, James Godber, G. Frost, J. IS. Fitzgerald, A. A. Atkinson, M. M. F. Luckie, and W. H. P. Barber. On. the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided that the band subsidy be paid in half-yearly instalments in future. Authority was given for tho payment of an account from the Tramway Department for £70 15s. 6d., being tho Corporation's proportion of the cost of sixteen tramway passes issued to charitable institutions. Councillor Fitzgerald objected to this account being recognised. It was, he said, simply an attempt to bolster up the tramways system at the expense of other city departments. He moved that, the matter be referred back t-o the Finance Commitee. Councillor Hildreth seconded the motion. which was also supported by Councillor Fuller, but on a division being taken the motion to refer back was lost b.v 8 votes to 4. On the recommendation of the ByLaws Committee, it was decided that a condition be inserted in license:* asued for the storage of dangerous goods prohibiting the storage of benzine in any portion of the building other than arranged for by tho inspecting officer. Tho council issued instructions for repairs to be effected to the premises in Lambton Quay occupied by Johnson and Co., as recommended by the City Engineer. A four years' lease of Section 140, Lambton reclaimed land (Featherston Street), was granted to Messrs. Higginson and MacShane, sharebrokers, at a rental of £135 per annum. The Public Health Committee reported that Councillors'Godber, Bush, and Wright had been appointed to wait upon the District Health Officer with reference to a more rigid inspection of the milk coming into and vended in the city. Tho report was adopted. Tenders were accepted as follow:— Steel tires, B. L. Donne; Boosters switch panels and instruments, the British General Electrical Company; meters for Lighting Department, P. R. Baillie and Co.; alterations to Thorndon Tramway offices, Wakelin and Hill. The City Solicitor was authorised to promote legislation to give effect to his recommendation in regard to the money required to complete the Melrose district drainage scheme.
