EASTBOURNE CARNIVAL TO-MORROW.
At a meeting of ithe executive of th# Eastbourne Carnival, held last evening, it was decided, owing to a- number of the Queen candidates: and their supporters who are crossing the harbour to assibt the Carnival, being only able to catch the 2.30 p.m. boat over to-morrow, to delay the procession until 8 p.m. The marshals were appointed, and the procession will move off immediately on arrival of the boat from town. It was al6o decided ito hold a baby show, the arrangements for same being left in the hands of Mijs. Chitty, Messrs. Walker and Urgan. The executive also desir« to intimate to intending visitors that in addition to the special boats at 1.15 and 2.30 p.m., the usual 4.15, 6.10, and 9.20 p.m. boats will also run. Extensive preparations for decorting the wharf and streets of Kona Bay have been made.. Arrangements have also been made with the City Cov.rcil for a late tram ito Newtown to meet the midnight boat from Rona Bay, The ballot closes at 9 p.m. at the Bay, but owing to the Saturday. half-holiday the ballot-box at Mr. Speed's, Lambton Quay, will b» cleared at 1 p.m. The proceedings will also be enlivened, by the presence, of Professor Cardston. and. his pierrots, and a brass band. j ART UNIONS DRAWN. The fancy dress skating carnival in aid of the Combined Drapers' Queen candidate was brought to a successful close last night, in the Palace Skating- Rink. There was again a large attendance of skaters and spectators, and the competitions and races' throughout the night were watched with interest, while the competition for the prizes was keen. The promoters extend their thanks to Mr. M. J. Donnelly, who lent the hall, skates, and attendants free of charge, and to the manager, Mr. Matson, for tho assistance he rendered. The rink band and other musicians added greatly to the entertainment. Miss M'Kay, who had charge of the refreshment tooth, worked hard with her assistants, and their takings will considerably augment the tads. The organising work in connection with the carnival fell largely on Miss Elson, who did a great deal to make tho function the success it was. The following are the prize-winners of the various competitions:—Lady's poster dress: Miss C. Imrie ("Three Castles Cigarettes"). Gentleman's poster dress: Mr. ,T. M'Kay ("The Dominion"). Shaddick and Mr. A. M'Cleary. Couples' musical square: Miss M'CormacK and Mr. E. M'Donald. Best impersonation of lady by gentleman: Mr. J. Roland. The Commercial Travellers' Committee is arranging a tirawiugvooui entertainment, to tuke place at His Majesty's Theatre, Courteuuy i'laco this atternoou at 3 o'clock, in aid of the candidature of it;s queen, Miss K. Doughty. Among those taking part are Mr. and Mrs. Newton, Mr. Culford Bell, Miss V. ."Waters (JJujieiiin), Miss Dfiscoll, ill'. Fitzgerald, Mr. C. Hickinoct, Mr. W. Thompson, Air, Luks, and Miss Lonsdale, and Miss Crane (club-swinging). Air. - LI. Petursen will be the accompanist. The organ to be raffled on behalf of the Hutt Valley candidate (Aliss A. SI. Senior) for the Queen of the _ Carnival contest, was donated, by the British and Continental Piano Company. Attention i 6 drawn to the advertisement in this issue of the monster ai-t union, under the auspices of. the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association. There are 100 prizes, many of which are on view at the Singers' Sewing Siachine Depot, in Willis Street. Tickets, Is. each, can be obtained on application to the secretary of the Commercial Travellers' Club, Wellington. From the interest taken by the Maoris in connection with the entertainment to be held aext Tuesday, in aid of the Fund for Wounded Soldiers and Sailors, tho performance should be a memorable one. The Maoris in Otaki and surrounding districts have been most enthusiastic, and are most anxious to do their best in the interests of this worthy national fund. There' has already been a great demand at Begg's for seats, which ensures a monster attendance. The Wellington Football Association have arranged an excellent programme for their carnival at the Basin Heserve 'to-morrow afternoon and evening. Tho events set down include:—Highland dancing, harriers' races, ladies' fancy costume football match, shooting matcn, representative football match, electric light display, and' dancing. Three brass bands will be in attendance, and the public are promised an excellent, afternoon and evening's enjoyment. A well-known Government fire inspector was hauled before the Commercial Travellers' Mock Court, and being fined, agreed to pay, on condition that the amount was used to support the election of the Public Service queen candidate. The Court accepted the situation in the Hght spirit, and Captain Hugo's 10s. will purchase votes for Aliss Palmer. ' Ail enthusiastic poultry fancier at Feilding placed a number of his prize birds in pens labelled with names made famous by the war, and submitted tho lot to auction. The proceeds amount to nearly .£4O, and this sum has been handed over in support of the Public Service candidate. The Grand coronation fancy dress hall in connection ivith the Queen' Carnival will be held on Wednesday, June 30. In the Lyceum Theatre, Petone, a boxing carnival will be held this evening in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. It is said that New Zealand's best'' boxers, including Tim , Tracey, Billy Elliott, W. Olliver, W. Mack, Young Taylor, Mafk Minifie, and others are taking part in the contest, which will be under the control of the Wellington Boxing Association. The big school concerts in connection, with the Carnival promise to be a great feature. For. some weeks past now Mr. Robert Parker has had a choir of 750 picked children's voices from the State schools under rehearsal, and' they are said to be showing fine form in the- patriotic songs to be sung. The dates, of these concerts are July 1 and 2. Thursday, June 24, has been 6et asido for a big spectacular dance recital to be given by some 250 school children under the direction of the Misses Holm (2). This entertainment, will bo largely of a patriotic nature and should make a special appeal to those who take pleasure in children ensemble movements of a picturesque order. 1 A monster hard-up dance is to be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday to raise funds to further the candidature of Nurse Everitt, the nominee of the Combined Sports for Carnival Queen hanours.
