MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ALLEGED THEFT YOUNG MEN CHARGED At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper. S.M., two s'oung men, John Cash in an (represented by Mr. J, J. M'Grath) and Charles Uompster (represented by -Mr. A. H. Hiudmarsh), appeared to answer a charge that, at Wellington on Juno 3, „ y wmmit theft of a miscellaneous collection of ties, bracos, fancy studs, shirts, etc., of tno value of £25. the property of Messrs. Butterworth Bros., Dunedin. Inspector Hendrey, who conducted the prosecution, said that it was only intended to call one witness, and then to ask for a further remand in the case. ■Albert High, commercial traveller in Hie employ of_ Messrs. Butterworth Bros., gave' evidence that on June 1 he was jn Blenheim. He packed his samples in seven hampers and one case, ' .consigned' them to Dunedin, via " ellington. In the ordinary course of events tho samples would nave to be stored at some place on the wharves jn Wellington. On his arrival in Wellington he found the lock on one of the hampers opened, and examined the hamper. He found that some goods had been removed. Further he said that artioles had been taken from all the hampers. The locks were similar to those used by most commercial houses. They be opened with a piece of wire, He identified goods in Court as belonging t-o Messrs. Butterworth Bros. The total value of the goods in Court was £21 15s. 9d. Goods to the value ; of £29 Bs. Ud. were missing. Accused were remanded till Friday iiort, the understanding being that the caise would be then adjourned to a date to suit the Cotlrt. MINOR CHARGES. Fot drunkenness, Louisa Tierney and. Jas. Hamilton were each fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and three first offenders were dealt with. | For fighting outside the Terminus Hotel on Thursday night, Joseph Reginald Harding and Wm. M'Eneiney were each fined 205.,, in default three days' imprisonment. James Oliver Armstrong was remanded till Monday on a charge of theft of fifteen packets of cigarettes, valued at 's. 6d., tho property of Chow Boor. Ernest Johnston was fined 55., with costs 75., for leaving two horses and a lorry unattended in Willis Street. S. Pearce was fined 55., with 7s. costs, for driving a motor-car after sunset without a. rear light, and Henry F. Stringer was similarly dealt with for driving an express after sunset without lights. W. Venn was convioted and ordered to pay lis. costs for travelling on a tramcar and refusing to pay his fare. For allowing cattle to wander, Geo. Hudson was fined 55., with 7s. costs; A. Dairies was fined 10s., with lis. costs, and on another- charge fined 65., with os. costs. D._ Perry was fined 65. ( with costs 75., in default 24 hours' military detention, for failing to atteild drill.
