NEW TRAMWAY WORKS

NEARLY £70,000 THIS YEAR. At tho mooting of llio Trmmviivs Committee of t-lio City Council to-day, Clio matter of laying out, approximately £70,000 in extension work will be discussed, but as the council is already committed iu a- measure to most of tho works proposed to be carried out with this amount of money, tho discussion is likely to be more explanatory than otherwise to the now members of the committee, the others having been fully apprised with tho works contemplated. The principal work to be considered is tho extension of the Constable Street section down Crawford Road to Kilbirnio South. The cost of this work as far as tho Tramways Department is concerned will bo £2-1,000, but otlior moneys will havo to bo found out of tho jjwieral revenue for road widening and formation. Then there is the amount of £15,000, sot down for tho erection of carrepair workshops nt Kilbirnio (on the Soatoun Road), whioh is said to bo absolutely nccossary in view of the congestion at the Wellington South sheds —which, by tho way, are being extended towards Russell Terrace. Othor works to be provided for will bo an additional feeder line to Brooklyn, various bits of track duplication to save time and facilitate the handling of the cars, and the completion of twelve more cars, six of which only awa.it the arrival hero of the under caniago and motors delayed by the upheaval of tho war. Tho total amount proposed to be expanded on new tramway work during tho cm-rout year is .£60,308. As a great deal of special work would be needed to improve the track arrangements at tho Courieuny Placo stopping-place and the general disruption at Home makes it difficult to know when an order can be executed and delivered, it is not likely (hat this work will bo don© during tho present year. Subject to tho approval of the conunitloo, tho tramways vote for now works will bo submitted to tho council on Thursday evening.
