FOR THE WOUNDED SOLDIERS
A SUEPRISE CONCERT. Oji Saturday evening at tlio Crand Optra House a. "surprise" concert was given under the auspices of tho St. John Ambulance Association and Red Cross Society in aid of the Wounded New Zealand Soldiers' and Sailors' J'und. The "surprise" to most people was that, so very large ail audienco could be assembled at only two days' notice, which spoke well for t'he enthusiasm which had backed the enterprise. The Wellington Liedertafel sang a glee on a "Britons All' theme, and later "Tho Soldiers' Farewell." Mr. C. Ji. Stephens, who always sings artistically, contributed two quaijit songs including "The P. and 0. Line" from Rudyard Kipling's "Just So" stories, anid Mr. H. Moschini played a clarinet solo tastefully. Miss Grace Komiedy contributed violin solos. Mr. H. F. von Haasfc, who is given to verso, produced and sang a now serio-comic patriotic song entitled "New Zealand," which exuded tlio sentiments of tlio times, and which was sung by the compose]- with vigor mid expression. Mr. Von Haast was also responsible for "Two Little Submarines,' a song with a moral, topical to and typical of. tho hour. Miss JJario Stringer posed prettily on her toc-tips in a movement entitled "Val.se Caprice," played by Miss Beere. Dainly little Hazel Ilardwick, pirouetted with much charm of manner, supported by Mr. T. O'Carrol, with music by Jliss fieere. Prof.' Cards ton's "Pierrots" provided a couple of ragtime ditties, and Miss D. Smith revived with success the old-time Serpentine Dance, some pretty effects being gained by coloured lightg.
