There is nothing democratic in allowing men to constitute themselves a privileged _ class, exempt from a share of tho public sacrifice. "The case for national-service is so' clear, and fair, that we do not believe that any. serious opposition _ will bo raised. .We doubt whether it will be neoesasry to talk of oompulsion, for all decent men and women are longing to bo told how they can best servo the country they love, and aro awaiting a clear oall." The Paris "Temps"- comments tliat the British resolution not to shrink lrom sacrifice was never stronger, and predicts that, the new Ministry will be a.i intermediary step to prepare public opinion.—("litnos" and Sydney A 'Sun" Services.). AUSTRALIA'S QUOTA. STATEMENT IN FEDERAL' HOUSE. (Reo. June 5, 0.5 a.m.) Melbourne, June 4. In the House Mr; Joseph Cook', Leader of the Opppsition, urged the necessity of further reinforcements. He was not sure whether tho time had not come to compel the registration of all able-bodied men to meet tte exigencies of defence.
