"FRIGHTFUL" METHODS IN WAR
POPE DEPLORES THEIR TJSE. ■ (Rec. May 29, 6.15 p.m.) London, May 28. The Pope has written to Cardinal Vannutelli, deploring the methods of offence, which, contrary to the dictates of humanity and international usage, have been introduced into' the war?—("Times" and Sydney "Sun Services.) TEXT OF THE LETTER. (Rec. May 30, 3.40 p.m.) Rome, May 29. The Pope's letter to Cardinal Van- , nutelli has been published in the "Osservatore Romano." After complainnig that his voice in favour of peace had not been heeded by the belligerents the Pope deplores the conflagration which has extended to our beloved Italy, and points out that it will be necessary to make efforts for the relief of the wounded, and the prisoners. He exhorts all Catholics to practise a three days' strict ecclesiastical fast, and accords plenary indulgence, applicable to souls in purgatory. He adds: "I wish- that the echo of our voice might reach all our children who may be afflicted by the scourge 9f war, and persuade them of our participation m their sorrows and troubles."
