ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
p WOMAN'S SUDDEN DEATH. The death took place, suddenly, yesterday afternoon of Ellen Hopkins, 48 years of age, at her residence, 33 Pipitea Street. From information gathered by the police, it appears that the deceased has been for some years past subject to attacks of sickness, for which she got relief by taking milk and 6oda, hut did not consult a doctor. On Saturday she had another attack, and went to bed, as was her usual custom. She did not seem to be any worse than usual, but yesterday afternoon her 13-year-old daughter noticed that she seemed very ill, and went for a neighbour. When the neighbour arrived the woman was dead. Dr. Henry was called, hut could only pronounco life extinct. Tho fact of the case have been reported to the Coroner, and an inquest will no doubt be held. DEATH AT THE HOSPITAL. A man named _ Neilson, who was taken to the Hospital by the police yesterday morning, died in the institution at half-past ten o'clock last night. It is understood that when found' by the police he was suffering from exposure, the result of sleeping out. An inquest will be held. FALL FROM A TRAMCAR. Mrs. Whitehead, a resident of Thorndon, was admitted to tho Hospital last evening suffering from slight injuries to the head, sustained in a- fall while alighting from a tramcar in Tinakori Road. KILLED INSTANTLY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Tlmaru, May 25. Patrick William Hamilton, labourer, while riding on a loaded horse-lorry on the Main Road near Tamil ka fell in front' of a wheel and was killed instantly. Ho leaves a widow and five young children. MAN DIES AFTER TAKING POISON. Dunedin, May 25.' . A man named John George Smyth died at the hospital this afternoon under conditions pointing to suicide. Deceased, who was about 44 years of age, had been living apart from'his wife and family of several- children for some time. About 3.45 p.m. he came downstairs in the house at which he stayed, and in his hand was a bottle which contained poison, ilis landlady tried to stop him from drinking the contents of -the bottle, but failed, and she sent for the police. Smyth was taken to the hospital, but died soon after admission.
