CENTRAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Central Chamber of Commerce held their ordinary executive meeting yesterday afternoon. Mr. C. M. Luke presided, and there were also present: Messrs. G. Winder, L. Bush, W. Smith, J. F. Atkins, E. Fitzgibbons, J. Reid, H. G. Hill, R. Hall.
The holding of a "shopping week" in conjunction with the New Zealand Patriotic Society in June next was considered. The secretary reported that Mr. Ponder, of the National Cash Register Co., who first brought up the matter, was of opinion that there did not remain sufficient time in which to work up a "shopping week," and his company would prefer that the idea should be postponed till a later date.
It was decided to reply to that effect, and Mr. R. Hall was appointed a delegate on. the_ Patriotic Committee to assist in their work, as tho Chamber's representative.
Mr. Luke said that it was now for the Patriotic Society to approach industrial and shopping associations, if they desired to go on with the matter. Mr. H. G. Hill said that he did not think the Chamber should take up the idea of tho "'shopping week." It was more for the Patriotic Society to take an interest in. He understood that a number of the shopkeepers had boen approachod.
It was decided to adopt the report. It was decided to send delegates to the conference of Chambers of Commcrco proposed by tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce. The executive was instructed to prepare remits, and tho appointment of delegates was held over.
In view of a request from the Mas-tciton-Waipukurau Railway League, it was decided to ask the committee appointed last year'to consider the advisability of holdiug another provincial conference.
