ILL-TREATING A HORSE
A DRIVER FINED
Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Joseph M'Kernan was charged on the information of the S.P.C.A. with illtreating a horse. Captain Henry, the society's, inspector, said in his evidence that the horse, which accused had oharge of, was not fit for work when he saw it ill Ingestre Street. It had 6ores under its harness and on different parts of the body. All the sores were raw and bleeding. The Magistrate said the case was quit© clear against accused. who would be fined £2, with costs 135., and solicitor's fee £1 Is.
As a result of a street argument which lead to blows, Vincent Barrow appeared charged with assaulting Clifford Toomer. A fine of 205., in default three days' imprisonment, was imposed. George Sampson, who was arrested bv Dctective Andrews on two charges, one of stealing clothing and another of attempting to steal, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment on each charge. Elizabeth Lee Wood was convicted and ordered to oome up for sentence when called upon on a charge of stealing goods to the value of 365., the property of John Parry, a second-hand dealer. Nora Nugent, an old offendor, with 137 previous convictions against her name, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and sent to a Salvation Army Home for twelve months, on a charge of being idle and disorderly, in that she was found begging. Elizabeth Musgrave was deemed to be an incorrigible rogue, and committed to the Salvation Army Home for twelve months.
Annie Carlson was sent to gaol, for three months on a oharge of wing a rogue and a vagabond. _ Sarah Hooker was sent to a Salvation Army Home for six months on a charge of committing a breach of her prohibition order.
For drunkenness, Margaret Webb and James M'Kenzie were each fined £1, or three days' imprisonment, and Lucy Mitchell fined 10s., or forty-eight hours' imprisonment. The last-named had a prohibiton order taken out aginst lier oil her own application. Seven firstoffondincc inebriates wore dealt with.
For Sunday trading, Elizabeth Burtenshaw was fined 10s., with costs 7s.
MAINTENANCE CASES. Thos. Backhouse was ordered to pay ss. a week maintenance as a result of an application for an order made against him. For disobeying maintenance orders, James 'Jamieson was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, tho warrant to be suspended on payment of ss. weekly, and James William Murdock Ross was sentenced three days' imprisonment at Wanganui, the warrant to be suspended on payment of £1 weekly. James Alfred Moore was ordered to pay 20s. a ;week maintenance for his wife, along with solicitor's fee, £1 Is.
