ALLIES RECOVER LOST TRENCHES STRONG ATTACKS ON ST. JDLIEN AND HILL 60 The High Commissioner reports:— London, May 7, 1.45 p.m. On Thursday evening a German attack at Bagatelle completely failed. "On the remainder of the front, notably north of Ypres, and in the neighbourhood of Vauquois (near Verdun), thero aro proceeding violent artillery duels." ' J • . London, May 8, 10.20 p.m. General French reports to-night that yesterday fighting continued southeast of l'pres without a change in the situation. Wo recovered trenches lost the day before. In the morning the endmy started a violent attack on the trenches from the Ypres-Poclchappcllo and the Ypres-Menin Roads. A heavy bombardment preceded the attack. "Fighting continues, and counter-attacks are in progress. There is no change on the remainder of the front." London, May 8, 1.20 p.m. "At dawn yesterday the Germans violently attacked the British liues at St. Julien. The attack was repulsed, with heavy eJiemy losses. "On Hill 60 the British have retaken part of the trenches lost on Tuesday evening." w London, May 8, 2.35 p.m. "Paris reports that a strong German work west of Lens has been carried. "Progress has been made on the right bank of the La Fecht River iii Alsace." "ANNEXATION" OF BELGIUM. (Rec. May 9, 10 a.m.) Amsterdam, May 8. The Germans have placarded Antwerp with announcements declaring the annexation of Belgium from May 5. • ENEMY'S HUGE LOSSES. (Rec. May 9, 30 a.m.) Amsterdam, May 8. The Dutch newspaper, "Telegraaf," estimates that the Germans lost 150,000 from all sources in Flanders and Northern France in the recent fighting.
