GREAT BATTLE IN GALICIA The High Commisionerß' reports:— London, May 8, 5.15 p.m. "In the Baltic Provinces, in tne region of Mitau, the Russians continue to . press the enemy closely. "In North Poland the Russians are ] developing their recent successes. "In West Poland the enemy's attempt to cross the Pilica in. the region of < Kodloweo was repulsed. "In Galicia, between the Vistula and : the Carpathians, the continued desperate fighting has assumed the character of a great battle. The arrival of several German army corps here has been revealed. "In the direction of Mezo Laborcz the Russians repulsed with the bayonet six vigorous attacks. • In the Valley of ' Lomuiza there have been important ! Russian successes. ' 1 WHAT THE CERMANS CLAIM. j FURTHER SUCCESSES IN GALICIA. j (Rcc. May-9, 10.15 a.m.) Amsterdam, May 8. A German official message says: "We i have had further successes on the : Lower Douajecz. The enemy continues £ hastily to retreat. A small Russian < force still resists on the Vistula. 1 "The Russians are retreating from t the Carpathians west of the Lupkow Pass. ' "The Austro-Germans crossed the : Aisloka near Pilzno and Fastlo. "A strong Austrian force in the Tukla-Rytan'o district bars the Russian lino of retreat. "The Russians made desperate attacks on the eastern sector of the Carpathians but were repulsed with heavy losses." t 5
