BOXING
CARNIVAIi AT THE TOWN HALL. FOlt WOUNDED SOLD] Jill & I' UND. A Boxing Tournament, promoted b.v tlio Wellington Boxing Association ns a means of raising iiionoy lor tlio r-ow Zealand Wounded Soldiers' fund, was held in tlio Town Hnll last evening, on/ was not largely attended. Six liugoy inter-club contests and seven J l '" 01 events had boon arranged, but no fonci than tivo were dropped from Ino programme. Two interesting woro substituted, viz., an exhibition spar at catch-weights between the two wellknown boxers, J. W. Oliver (Cioss • Creek) and M'Farlano (Potone), and an exhibition of bayonet exercises by a military squad, whose contribution to the porformanco was much appreciated by those who had tho plcaßuro ot witnessing it. Mr. T. Sampson acted as rofereo for the whole of _ tho boxing events, tho results of which aro indicated below: — Rugby Inter-Club Contests. The welter-weight contest between W. Tancred (Potone), lOst. 71b., and A. M'Kay (Athlotie), lOst. 61b., was a short-lived affair. M'Kay led off with both hands, but was pushed off .to arms length by Tancred, who administered a left hook that sent his opponent down for three seconds. On rising il Kay made a move to avoid a loft feint by Tancred, and in doing so met tho lull force of the Petone man's right hand, and fell with a thud. He rose as tho rofereo called "five," but it was evident that he was not fit to continue boxing, and Mr. Sampson stopped the contest and announced that Tancred was. tho winner. The spectators applauded vigorously as tho competitors retired from the ring, M'Kay Saving to be assisted to the dressing-room. B. Algar (Poneke), list. 21b., defeated W. Francis (Wellington), list. 31b., on points, after a willing three rounds, in' which there was a good deal of wrestling, hut not much of science. In the feather-weight contest, Desmond (Poneke), Bst. 41b., easily defeated T Byrno (Petono), Bst. 31b. The latter was very tired in tho third round and fell through the ropes on the slightest provocation. Nevertheless he persevered with considerable grit to the end and his plucky effort earned him an ovation. , P. Brosnan (University), list. 41b. scored a very popular victory over H. Tancred (Petone), 12st. lib. The first round was particularly unilltoresting, but in the second Brosnan scored repeatedly with his right. Tancred was cautioned for holding and hitting in this round, and as lie offended twice again, .tho referee had 110 option but to disqualify him and award tlio contest to Brosnan. A draw was called at the conclusion of the middleweight contest between A. Meldrum (University), lOst. 121b, and B. Giuders (Poneke), list. Each competitor treated his opponent with rather more respect than was necessary in the circumstances, and the bout was consequently not as interesting as the spectators would have liked. Other Events. Two feather-weights, V. T. Pointon, Bst. 71b., and A. Belsham, Bst. 71b., boxed three rounds, scoring a minimum number of hits. A decision ou points was awarded to Pointon. A special welter-weight contest between 0. Watson (Petone), lOst. Sib., mid Private Silvester (sth Reinforcements), lOst. 51b., had advanced to the . second round and was proceeding hopelessly against Silvester when Mr. Samp- ! son called a finish and declared Wat- . son the winner. Silvester had been . knocked down just before the decision ! was given against him. ; The concluding event of the evening j was a bout between two Wellington , feather-weights, W. Mack, Bsfc. 121b., - and a coloured competitor E. Lopez, , 1 8st. 91b. Tlie latter was outpointed , from the beginning to the ena of the . three rounds. .
