THE PARNELL TRAGEDY
. THE INQUEST. (By Telegrarh.—Press Association.. Auckland, May 3. An inquest was opened to-day on the body of John Josepn Sayer, who committed suicide at Bath Street, Parnell, on April 13, after he had attacked his wife with an axe. Mary Ann Sayer, wife of the deceased, appeared with her head bandaged.' She stated that when her husband went to work in the morning they were on friendly terms. Ho returned at 9 a\m., saying ho had been kicked by a horse.- lie seemed full of liquor, and went straight to bed. When he awoke he remained about the house. Nothing exciting occurred until 11 p.m., when deceased, who had gone to bed, • got up and went into the yard, telling her to wind up the clock and go to bed. Ho came back throe times. Mean- : time she fell asleep, and remembered nothing more until she found herself in the hospital, suffering from injuries to her head. - . / The Coroner returned a vgrdicf. of suicide while of unsound mind, consequent upon excessive drinking.
