IN THE HOCKEY FIELD
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES THE SEASON'S PROSPECTS. St. 'Augustine's, 3; Wellington, 1, United, 4; University, 1. Karori, a bye.
The hockey season was rather inauspiciously opened at Karori Park on Saturday. The effects of the war on tho game were very apparont, and where, during previous seasons, the grounds were the scene of enthusiasm and bustling activity, this Saturday tho various elevens —remnants of "thoso who were left behind" —settled quietly down to their games. Yet, in spito of the adverse cricumstances the muster was rather surprising. Players from disbanded clubs .filled the gaps in the ranks of those teams which had retained enough vitality to remain in the field, juniors graduated to senior teams and so altogether twelve teams—senior and junior—were able to take the field. Naturally, with such a mixing up of players, combination was very much absent, while form was poor. That there was good material, however, was evident, and with hard practice some good games should be witnessed this Beason. Particulars of the various games are as follow:— SENIOR MATCHES. ST, AUGUSTINE'S —WELLINGTON. The first half of this game was very even indeed. Sheeraa, playing an excellent game, was responsible for the first score. The second spell was St. Augustine's, and in it A. Webley—very prominent throughout the game—succeeded in netting three goals. Mr. A. Manning was referee. UNITED—UNIVERSITY. There was nothing very exciting or spectacular about the meeting between the respective champions of 1914 and 1913—United and University. Andrews scored for United in the first spell with t.wo very fine shots from the corners of the field. Jacobsen favoured University with their only score, by accidentally netting the ball for them. In the second spell Andrews added another brace of points to United's total. Parfitt, a new player for United, was responsible for good play, while Atkinson, a Hawke's Bay "rep.," also played well. United's Tearguard—Mellor and Gaze —featured the game with their determined and effectual efforts to defend -their citadel. i Mr. J. C. Cusack was referee. JUNIOR CAMES, Karori defeated Hutt Valley by 3 goals to nil. C. Pell (2) and Sunley were the scorers. Wellington (3) (defeated University (1). St. Augustine's (3) defeated Weslev (2). United A won by default from Insurancs. A fair sprinkling of ladies put' in some useful practice, preparatory to the opening of the season on May 8.
