FOODSTUFFS COMMISSION
A MERCHANT'S STATEMENT.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrlstohuroh, April 21. Replying to a statement made by the Secretary of the Foodstuffs Commission that the Commission has never had before it evidence of exploitation, Mr. Andrew Fairbaiin, merchant, informed a "Star" reporter that he had gone before the Commission and produced original documents to show that the very day the war was declared the prices of foodstuffs had been advanced from 10 to SO per cent, on goods which carried no increased cost whatever. He also gave evidence proving that if his firm raised prices to the same extent as its competitors his additional profits for one month's trading would have amounted to at least £5000. His firm had never charged these excessive prices, and yet its profits, selling. under normal conditions since the commencement of war, were at least equal to those of previous years. He had made frequent applications to the Commission for a copy of his evidence, but was unable to obtain it.
