DAY-S BAY WHARF
HARBOUR BOARD APPROACHED
The inadequacy of the Day's Bay wharf for dealing with holiday rusn traffic was touched on at last night's meeting of the Wellington HarW Board.
A deputation from the Eastbourne Borough Council waited on the board, and the spokesman; (Mr. R. L. Button) said that the matter of the wharf had caused the council a great deal of earnest thought. The wharf was adequate for ordinary traffic, but on big holidays the wharf became so overcrowded that the position was really dangerous. The matter had been brought to a bead last Easter Monday, when several thousand people wished to get to the City-bound boats at about the one time. The danger was in the narrowness of tho wharf, and the deputation suggested that the board should erect a larger wharf.
The chairman of the board (Mr. R. Fletcher) asked if the Eastbourne Council would be prepared to contribute to the cost of a new wharf.
Mr. Button: Thank you for mentioning that. We havo paid to the board, exclusive of rent, £460 in license fees, wharfage fees, and berthage fees in a year. The chairman said that the interest, depreciation, and sinking fund on the wharf cost the board £794 annually, so that the structure was not a paying proposition for them. Mr. W. Perry (one of the deputation): That amount is for tho two wharves. The chairman: Yes. The chairman reminded tlie deputation that tho board was about to go out of office, and he added that no doubt, the new board would give the matter due consideration.
