S.S. TURAKINA AT HOBART. Advice has been received by the local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company stating that R.M.S. Turakina arrived /it Hobart from London, via Cape Town at 6 p.m. on Saturday. She is expected to continue her journey on to Wellington at 6 p.m. to-day and should arrive hero oil Friday evening or early Saturday jnorning.

THIS WEEK'S SYDNEY BOAT. This week' 6 Sydney boat—the HuddartParker Company's Ulimaroa—cleared tho New South Wales port at 1 p.m. on Friday'for Wellington direct. She is due hero to-morrow morning and will land 67 saloon and 74 steerage passengers. Her cargo for this port amounts to 800 tons. The Ulimaroa will leave Wellington on the return trip on Thursday next.

TALUNE REPLACES TAVIUNI. It has been, decided • to withdraw the Taviunl from the Auckland-Eastern Pacific 6orvice, and the Talune will resume running in her stead. Prior to the outbreak of -war tho Talune had been engaged in the trade, but it was decided, to remove her in consequence of the falling-off of both cargo and passengers. To suit the convenience of Island traders and others, the Union Company placcd tho Taviuni in the service. Now, however, the traders are complaining about the slowness of >the latter steamer, and also that she docs not keep her time table. The Talune is at present at Auckand refitting after having acted as a transport for some time.

RELEASE OF CAEG9 FKOM JAVA. With a view to ' securing the'release of cargo in the intcinied German vessels at Java, Mr. Caleb Allen, manager at Port Adelaide for Messrs. Harris, Scdrfe (Ltd.), is reported to have left Sydney on Saturday. It is stated that Mr. Allen's trip is being made on behaf of .between 700 and 800 consignees in Australia and New Zealand. Tho total weight of the cargo is 17,000 tons, and it'is valued at over £200,000. Should shipowners refuse to release tho cargo, application is to be made to the Courts of Java. Mr. J.. T. Martin recently returned to. Wellington from a mission to Java in connection with the interned cargo, and reported that there were many hindrances placed in hi 6 way of securing the cargo. He strongly recommended to tho Chamber of Commerce that the matter should be left in the hands of tho Rotterdam Trading Company,'who should, be furnished with necessary bills of lading, power of attorney, and other documents with full instructions. The chamber undertook to arrange this. Mr. Martin also stated that the cargo was found to be in excellent condition on the German ships. In fact, he had never seen better stowage. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. D. Eitson, third engineer of the Kamfl.ru, has come ashore, end the vacancy has been filled by Mr. R. Eutherford. Mr. 0. Pirie has taken Mr. W. Hall's place as chief engineer of the Karamu. Mr. A. Tough has signed on. the Wahlne as third engineer. Mr. Cosecntine,' late chief officer of the Kawi, has resigned his position to take over command of the Napier Harbour Board's dredge. Messrs. E. B. Denniston, A. W. Cole, H. M'Donald, .end W. Aylward, who served their apprenticeships as cadets on the training steamer Aparima, and successfully passed their second officer's examinations at Dunedm last week, have sinco been posted to the folio-wine vessels:—Mr. Denniston, to second officer on the Pukaki; Mr. Cole, to third on the Waitomo; Mr. M'Donald. to third on the Kowhal; and Mr. Aylwarid to fourth on the MoerakL Captain Billon, late of the Poherna, has taken charge of the Pukaki on the run from Lyttelton to Melbourne, where she will b,e handed over to the new owners, Messrs. Crosbie and Co. Messrs. Percy and Ingram, who served their apprenticeships on, the Union Comranys training steamer Aparima, have passed their examinations at Auckland for second officers' certificates, and axe now awaiting instructions. For the purpose of completing Homeward loading the C. and D. liner Hawke's Bay arrived at Wellington from Wanganui yesterday afternoon. It is anticipated that the vessel will get away for London tomorrow. Having completed coaling in tho stream at Wellington the 0. end D. Line' 6 Port Phillip left for Boston and New York at 2.20 p.m. on Saturday. The Government steamer Hinomoa is at present overhauling the lights and buoys in Eauraki Gulf. She is due back at Auckland on Wednesday, and will leave the northern port, in, continuation of her inspection of lighthouses, on Thursday or Friday of this week. According to the Union Company's timetable, K.JI.S. Niagara should have left Vancouver for Auckland, via way ports, at noon on April 14. She is due at Auckland on May 2. The Shaw, Savill liner Arawa was scheduled to leave Brisbane for Waltara yesterday for the purpose of commencing Home loading. The same compnny's chartered steamer Trafalgar, which cleared Wellington on M&rli 3, is duo at London on April 24. An expected arrival at Auckland from' San Francisco on April 23 is the Union Company' 6 big cargo carrier Waitcmata Subsequently tho vessel will visit Wellington to put out 3070 tons of cargo and will afterwards go on to Sydney. En route from Sydney to San, Francisco, the Union, steamer Wairuna is due at the latter port to-day.

Heavy rain having delayed the Kint at the Eluif slio will not arrive at Wcllineton before to-morrow. Dairy produce to the amount of 5000 crates of cheese will be transhipped (o the lonic at this port. Arrangements have been made for the Union, collier Kamona to load at Westporl for Oamaru and Duncd.n.

Nelson apples will be brought across from Motueka, in large quantities this week for transhipment to R. 11.5. lonic at Wellington for South America. The Anchor Line s steamer Kaltoa will leave here for Motile kn at 11 a.m. to-day to pick up 4CGO cases ot apples. She is duo back on Wednesday. The same company's steamer Kennedy will also brine a full load of fruit acrocfi on Wednesday.

Messrs. Seager Bros., of Auckland, have received tile- contract for repairs to tho Norwegian barque Cis, which was towod into Auckland early on the morning of March 28 in a dismasted condition. The sailer was bound from New Caledonia, to Glasgow with a cargo of nickel ore. The scow Korora lias been purchased by the firm of E. D. Pike and C., Ltd., of Sydney, and has Eailed from Auckland for her new port ol registry. From Melbourne the Maoriland Steam Ship Company's Ennerdale will proceed, to Auckland. After landing her freight at the northern port the vessel will go on to Tarakohc to load cement for Brisbane. Throe thousand tons of. coal aro being brought from Newcastlo to Miramar by the Melbourne Steam Ship Company' 6 Monaro. An expected arrival at Auckland from Sydney this morning is the Union Company's R.M.S. Makura. She is scheduled to sail from the northern port for Vancouver, via, Suva and Honolulu, at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The Maheno, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney direct yesterday morning, brought 48 saloon and 44 steerage passengers as well as over 1100 tons of cargo. It is announced that the Canterbury Steam Ship Company's, newly-purchased steamer Cuyaba will be dockca at Tort Chalmers oil April 21 prior to entering tho coastal trade. There is also a probability of this vessel being renamed the Zephyr. A telegram has been recckcd from Ohristchurch stating that the Chatham Islands Pishing Company's Himitangi left Lyttelton last evening for Kaingaroa, snd Owenga. The vessel will return to Lyttelton and will subsequently visit Wellington to discharge a local consignment of fish. A cargo of coal will bo lifted by the Kauri at Newcastle thig week for Lyttelton. Tho turret steamer Koromiko is now en route from the New • South Wales coal port for Napier.

After undergoing o very extensive overhonl at Port Chalmers during her withdrawal from the intercolonial trade, the Moeraki was to be docked on Thursday last for cleaning and painting, prior to resuming her usual running in tie WellinEtonSydney service, in place of the Mokoia. During her lay-up at Port Chalmers a number of additional state rooms have been built on ea<tfi side of the promenade deck, something after the style of those fitted out on the Maheno. These state rooms constitute a valuable addition, to the vessel's saloon accommodation, and 6hould prove very popular with tho travelling public.
