CIVIC AFFAIRS

: LAST MEETING OF PRESENT COUNCIL. _ The last meeting of the present City Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presiding. ' There were also present: Councillors H. Buddie, J. E. -. Fitzgerald, It. Fletcher, R. A. Wright, A. R. Atkinson; J. Fuller, J. Godber, W. J. Thompson, L. M'Kenzie, A. H. fiindmarsh, E. Tregear, G. Frost, M. Luckie, and W. H. P. Barber. It was Tesolved that the property at the corner'of Cuba and Vivian Streets, owned by the estate of the late . Mrs. Grace, be purchased at the price recommended by the City Valuer, and also that the balance of tho foreshore land at Houghton Bay, privately oVned,. be acquired under the Public Works Aot, 1908. The Finance Committee reported that they -have been advised ty the City Engineer; that discrepancies have been detected in the weight of corporation supplies recorded on the corporation weighbridge, as compared to the. weight recorded on the Harbour Board's weighbridge. The committee recommended that the officers be instructed to pay for supplies in accordance with the weights recorded in the corporation yard only, and that explanations be asked as to the discrepancies reported. The Mayor said that the difference in the weight of coal delivered on many occasions was sufficient to -warrant a report being made to the Finance Committee. Councillor Fletcher said that the Harbour Board weighbridge was tested almost every month." The Mayor ■ said that they were; not casting any reflection, but the difference of the weight'on many losds of coal warranted their action. The report waß adopted. The Reclamation Committee recommended "That Messrs. A. W. and F. C. Brailsford be advised that the council will be prepared, to accept the surrender of tneir present lease of Section 3, Block 2, Te Aro Reclamation, and grant them a new lease for the balance of their surrendered term, with rights .of .renewal in perpetuity for successive periods of 21 years, at a-ground rent to bo fixed by arbitration; the times for making arbitration in the first place to be fixed by the City Solicitor, and that the Special Order necessary to give effect to this resolution be passed. That in -respect of Messrs." Brailsford 8 offer of £3 17s. 6d. per toot, as tho rental to be :--iid for tho t'rst renewal period of 21 "years, th'a council inform them that they cannot accept such offer, but will accept £4 ss ; per foot. This offer is; to be n-*de without prejudice." The recommendation was adopted. -
