AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE
WRECK OF THE S.S. RAKIURA. Seveji members of the crew of the wrecked steamer Rakiura/ arrived in Wellington by the. Mkau yesterday morning. In-conversation with a reporter a membbr of the crew stated that the Rakiura struok' with "dramatio suddenness." He described the night as being fairly dark. The"-- weather had thickened, however, as . the night advanced, and towards morning thfe wind rose. It was three minutes to five on Wednesday morning when the vessel struck and when the watch belowhad'gone on deck they found that the Rakiura _ was' within 20 yards of the shore,'with a perpendicular rock looming over them. The ship's' bout was launched in exceptionally quick time, but on account of the weather it was decided to put out to sea. Despite the fact that the boatjs crew was scantily clad—some of the members only had a' singlet on—after an hour's cruising round it was decided to take advantage of the weather and make for Port Hardy, It was a hard pull, but they managed to reach the haven just before"9 a.m. Cold and hungry the members of the crew were succoured at Wiggings station, and they received all the care ; and attention which their condition warranted. ' '
It has been decided to hold a Magis. terial inquiry into the circumstances of the wreck as soon as arrangements oan be made. > :
