FIREMEN AT LAW

AN ACTION FOB SLANDER. (By Taleerftßh.—Pr»ss Association.) Dunedin, April 10. The first local case under the new Act of 1913, which gives Magistrates the power to try actions for slander, was mentioned in the Magistrate's Court today. The action rvai brought by Thomas George William LuscOmbe Marchal against George Evan Evans, both ships' firemen, plaintiff alleging that defendant falsely and malioiously spoke the following libel, for which he claimed £50 damages: "That Marchal took home a tin of fat from the boat, and he has been keeping his house on ships' stores for twelve months." The case was adjourned, plaintiff's counsel not being prepared to go on in view of the defence hied, which was that the allegation made iB true and privileged, and the consequent necessity of obtaining .further witnesses.
