ANNUAL CAMPING

WELLINGTON MEN AT KARORI

At 2 o'clock this afternoon some of the men of the Fifth (Wellington) Regiment will assemble at the Garrison Hall, Buckle Street, to proceed to Karori, where the annual encampment of the regiment will take place. An advance (or preparation) party went to the camping ground on Saturday, and tlie men who will go in to-day are the "four days' extra" men. These are men who have not during the yoar performed the number of parades required of thein by the Defence Act, and they are to be given the four days' instruction before the annual camp commences. The four days extra will make good the men's losses in parados up to twenty parades, and it gets over a difficulty for a number of men who find it very difficult to fulfil night attendances. The main camp commences four days after the "extras" go in, and lasts till April 24, in which time the regulation sevon days' annual training will be dono.

Later, a casual camp for the Wellington District will be held at Palmerstoa North.

Respecting the camp for the "four day 3 extra" men, Lieutenant-Colonel Brandon, Officer Commanding the Regiment, has sent the men cohcorned the following memo;— Tho extra four days is an opportunity for you to comply with the Defence Act. No pay will be allowed for the four days, but you will be given free rations, Otb.

Every year you are non-officiont adds one more year to your term of service.

You will be prosecuted if you are not efficient.

The four days have been added to th» camp training at a great cost to the Department. Yon will therefore see that the Department i 6 doing its host to help you to comply with the Act. From the annual camp, no exemption will be granted except "on medical grounds. Any momber of the regiment who finds it necessary to apply for leave must obtain & medical certificate from a doctor who is a member of tho New Zealand Army Medical Corps. Every man will he paid for nino days as follows: —Sergeant-majors and sergeants, ss. 6d.; sergeants, 55.: corporals, 46. 6d.; and other ranks, 4s. The battalion will arrive back in Wellington on completion of the training as early' as convenient on Saturday morning, April 24. Every man should take to camp on» extra pair boots, one change of underclothing, two paiis socks, hair and boot brushes, cleaning kit for boots, cleaning kit for accoutrements, two towels, tooth brush and powder, extra pair of trousers and sweater, knife, fork, spoon, enamel plate, and mug, two blankoto, nnd one rug, shaving and washing soap, razor, strop, and mirror, one pair slippers, one suit of pymmas. Major W. Simm will be in command at tho camp.
