AUCKLAND AUTUMN MEETING CHAMPAGNE STAKES WON BY ARRAN. MERRY ROE WINS EASTER HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association,) Auckland, April 3. The Autumn Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club opened to-day in lino though windy weather, and was largely attended. The course, owing to torrential rain on tho previous day, was holding when racing commenced, but improved as the day progressed. The sum of <£43,881 was put through the totalisator, against 10s. for the first day of the previous Autumn Meeting. Boldstroke delayed the start, but finally the field got away fairly well, Lady Penury and lied Book being alternately in front until entering the back stretch, when Lady Penury was piloting Achilledea and JRed Book, Lauy Penury still had a slight lead entering the straight when several challenged, . Royal Irish eventually gaining the verdict by a neck. Red Book was a neck ahead of Tangiwai, with Lady Penury and Achilledes handy. Time, 2min. 13 4-ssec. Dandy Breeze and Glov were coupled. r Dandy Breeze went ojit in front, and had a commanding lead passing the stand, but ran off just past the old milepost, when Spalperion was in front until the half-mile post, from which stage Tragedy King had the race safe, and finally defeated a challenge thrown out by Black Northern by three lengths. Goldfire was first to single himself out from a bunched field, and led until about a hundred yards from the post, .where Colonel Soult and Centre were distinctly noticeable. Centre gradually forged ahead nearing the post, and won by half a length, with Colonel Soult a length and a half further back third, and Grattan and Waiowera next. Time, lmin. 3 4-ssec.

The field was sent away to an excellent dispatch, but Desert Gold and Arran soon singled themselves out, and the pair fought out an interesting contest throughout. Arran got to the front round the home turn, and, hard ridden by Buchanan, passed the post a winner by three-quarters of a length, with Housewife, who finished strong, a neck further back third. There was no change in the leading positions until about half .the distance was covered, when King Lupin streaked to the front, and made the pace. He came into the straight at the head or' affairs, and was being loudly proclaimed at the distance, when several threw out challenges. Mercy Roe, in tho centre, got to the front inside the half-distance, and, displaying gamenoss, passed the post a winner by three-quarters of a length from Goldsize, who came from a good way back. Jack Delaval,' who finished fast on' the Tails, was third, threo-ijuarters _ of a length away from Goldsize. King Lupin was fourth, and Prince Soult fifth, while Bedford was amongst the last to finish, Downham also being well out of a place. Time, lmin. 43 2-ssec.
