BAND CONTEST

OPENING DAY'S RESULTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association,) Christchurch, April 3. The Band Contest under the auspices of the South Island Band Association began this morning. The visiting bands are: Wanganui Garrison, Wellington Tramways, 12th (Nelson) Regiment, Westport Garrison, 2nd (South Canterbury) Regiment, 9th (Hawke's Bay) Regiment, Hibernian Band (Invercargill), 10th (North Otago), City Band (Napier), and Kaponga. The following local bands are oompeting:—Now Brighton Marine, Ist Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry), Lyttelton Marine, Derry's Private Band, Woolston, Rechabites (Christchurch), and Rangiora. The judge is Mr. Percy Code, of Ballarat, Victoria. The results of the morning events are:—

E Flat Cornet Solo.—R. Wells (Invercargill Hibernian), 90 points, 1; P. Dunn (Wanganui Garrison), 87, 2; F. Turner (Oamaru Regimental), 84, 3. Also competed: W. Taylor (Timaru Regimental), F. Chapman (Timaru Regimental), L. Neighbours (Westport Garrison), G. Woods (Kaponga). The judge said the contest was characterised generally by good playing, but the winner stood out far above the rest.

I'lugcl Horn Solo. —J. Trussoll (Wanganui Garrison), 88, 1; R. G. Ward (C.Y.C., Christe'hurch), 87, 2; D. Bo.yer (Lyttelton Marine), 85, 3. Also competed: B. C. Johansen (Nolson Regimental), R. G. Allen and Jokn Lee (Timaru Regimental), Milroy (Westport Garrison), W. Tliomas (Oamaru Regimental). The judge had great difficulty in arriving at a decision. The standard of play, while not high, had been very even. The winner was an excellent player, but required more brilliancy in his work, his playing at present being rather tame. In the afternoon, on the Addington Showgrounds, a marching competition took place in the presence of a large crowd. Sixteen bands entered, fiut twelve only competed. Hie military judges were Captain M'Gee, V.R., Lieutenant AV. Hoar, and Sergeants-Major Franks and Skuttleworth. Timekeeper, Major Jones; judge of instruments, J. M'Cullough. The result was: — Wanganui Band, 272} points 1 Hibernian Band (Invercargill), 269 points 2 Timaru Band, 267 points 3 Wcstport Garrison Band,. 264} points 4 Detailed marks (in order of playing) are: —
