WAIRARAPA MEETING
GOLDSTREAM WINS EASTER HANDICAP. tFrom Our Suecial Correspondent.) The first day of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Autumn Meeting was held on. Saturday in fine weather. Thoughtful, who is very sore, and Elevonia, who has been up no time, were withdrawn from the Trial Hack Handicap, leaving eight runners. Ormesby saw a very short price, but though he won. it was nothing like the good thing indicated on the machine. Salado and the favourite began smartest, and were in front the whole way. Deviation, a fine big four-year-old by Elevation, looked- dangerous at the; turn, but he cut in when the whip was applied. Collector, who- finished fourth, appeared to be a bit unlucky, as he was. slow to find his feet, and was giving the leaders a big start at the half-journey. Doon was best liked in the Hack Welter Handicap, but she gave her backers a shock early in the race by. breaking away from "her attendant. She was caught again and led to the post. At the barrier Ruatangata struck himself badly on the hock, and had to return to the paddock, and a veterinary's services were secured. From a good start Conziska, Field Force, and Hap Dha were prominent, with Doon in the next bunch. The favourite was being hard ridden across the bottom, where Field Force compounded. Hap Dha was first into the straight, and won easily from Conziska, with Doon a fair third. Ulysses was next. . Goldstream was most fancied, in the Easter Handicap. At the jump out he led Immer and Want, and this was the order for a mile, where Mummer and Merrie Gain moved up. Goldstream was firßt into the straight, and, stalling off a ohallenge by Immer, he won by a neck, with Want in third place. Tho winner was greatly assisted by the fact that he went round the turns' better than the others. Hitherto he has been regarded only as a sprinter, but- on Saturday he ran on well, and should do hia owner further service. There were twelvo runners in the Nursery Handicap. Taringamutu was the public fancy, with Happiness, Pall Mall, Tirana, and Carillion following in that order. At tho start Goldbearin? on the outside began very smartly, ana at the home turn he had a good break on the field, but he ran very wide, and Tirana on the fence headed him-in th© run home. Taringamutu, who got a bad run, was third, followed by Pall Mall and Happiness. All the acceptors started in the Open Welter Handicap. Zeus was in much demand, as it was reckoned the firm going would suit him. Prince Laddo was sore, but tho public made him second choice. At the barrier Mount Victoria gave a lot of bother, and was left several lengths. Zeus and Rene carried on the running to the bottom stretch, where Mount Victoria and Amber and White displaced them. Mount Victoria led into the straight from Sartovna, with Rene coming fast. In the run home Mount Victoria held his and jnst won from Rene. _ Sartovna and Zeus were the next to finish. Miraculous and Multoe were tea smartest at finding their feet in the Makahi Hack Handicap, but before a furlong had been covered Royal, Sleeves led by several lengths, and was first into the straight just clear of Otter, Elopement, and. Botanist. In the straight the last-named finished on well, and secured tho verdict by a bare length from Otter. Haumakaka was clear of Elopement, who finished fourth. There were five starters in the conclnd. ing event. The betting was very and the heaviest supported, Chakwana, ■would have paid a good price to wini The start was a straggling one, Orleani getting out with a moving start, ano Blue Lake being left. Orleans had a break of three lengths at the half-mila but entering tho straight Clmkwanj ranged alongside and headed him. How, ever the weight told, and in a great struggle Orleans won by a head. Snra< turn, who ran wide at the home turn was third. Tho results are as undor':— •" TRIAL HACK HANDICAP. Six . furlongs. 1 Mr. P. Soames's b. g. Ormesby, Sst. 81b (M.
