NEUVE CHAPELLE

THE BIGGEST THING IN THE WAR London, April 2. An artillery officer, describmg the battle of Neuve Chapelle, says:—"lt was the biggest thing in the war. Wo again proved that barbed wire is useless against an artillery bombardment such as ours. Our infantry simply walked into Neuve Chapelle. The French war- | fare suits the Germans better than ours. Sitting still is their best chance; slapdish, running 'scraps' are our forte; mud Is their element. The chaos of deep holes made by shells from the 'Jack Johnsons' is everywhere. The holes are dangerous in the night, because they are filled with water deep enough to drown one. There is consolation in hearing the 'siren singing,' because the bullets that whistle pass by; the bullet that comes straight is a dog which bites before its bark is heard."
